The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Executive Office is seeking a highly motivated assistant with exceptional communication skills and attention for detail to work in a fast-paced environment. Under the general direction of the Assistant Secretary, Office of Legal Affairs, the Staff Services Manager I (Specialist) as a Special Assistant, will act as a liaison to specific divisions within the Department and keep the Assistant Secretary and the Chief Deputy General Counsels (CDGCs) informed on major policy issues, regulations, and initiatives. As the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary, the Staff Services Manager I (Specialist) will support the Assistant Secretary by managing and tracking all assignments for and from the Assistant Secretary and coordinate the Assistant Secretary's schedule. Perform administrative duties including, but not limited to: adhere to Department policies, rules and procedures; submit administrative requests including leave, travel, and training in a timely and appropriate manner. The Special Assistant will prepare complex analyses, conduct extensive research, and evaluate a variety of information relating to litigation, legislative and program history, and existing law. In addition, the Special Assistant will develop and evaluate alternatives, analyze data, and present findings and recommendations to the Assistant Secretary, the CDGCs, Executive Office, and program staff on complex subject matter areas. Consult with and advise administrators on a wide variety of subject-matter areas. Act as a liaison between the Assistant Secretary, the Governor's Office, Cabinet, and the Office of the Attorney General regarding highly sensitive and often critical issues. In the absence of the Assistant Secretary, the Special Assistant may represent the Department in meetings with the Executive Office, program staff, and staff from other departments. Prepare written documents to provide information and direction on issues related to Departmental programs and services such as amendments for legislation, Department position letters on legislative bills, and other legal correspondence. Analyze correspondence, research, and gather information to draft response memos and letters from the Assistant Secretary's Office.Main communication for this position will be through email. CDCR Headquarters has implemented a new automated system to streamline the hiring process.
